Who Needs Orthodontic Treatment?
Misaligned teeth can affect your oral and periodontal health and result in many secondary complications. We typically recommend orthodontic treatment to correct:
- Crowded teeth
- Protruding upper or lower teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Spacing or gapped teeth
- Malocclusions (overbites, underbites, open bites, crossbites)
Orthodontics for Children
There's no minimum age for your child to begin orthodontic treatment, but Dr. Diana Esshaki, Dr. Neil Flückiger, and the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child in Beverly, Salem, South Hamilton, or Topsfield receive their first orthodontic evaluation by around the age of seven.
Orthodontics for Teens
If you have a teen in Beverly, Salem, South Hamilton, or Topsfield who recently learned braces can improve their smile, you can find your answers during your free consultation with Dr. Diana or Dr. Neil.
Orthodontics for Adults
Orthodontic treatment isn't just for children and teens.
In fact, one in every five Beverly, Salem, South Hamilton, or Topsfield patients is over the age of 21.
Free Consultations for Children
Children and teens are the ideal candidates for orthodontic treatment.
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), along with Dr. Diana Esshaki and Dr. Neil Flückiger, recommend that all children in Beverly, Salem, South Hamilton, and Topsfield receive an orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven.
This first appointment usually does not involve a treatment recommendation. Instead, we can decide which treatments may be appropriate later on.
If treatment is not recommended upon initial exam, there may be a period of supervision or "recall".
During this time, appointments are made to monitor your child's growth, development, and the eruption of their teeth. No charges are assessed for these recall visits.
Many orthodontic problems are easier to catch and correct at an earlier age before all your child's permanent teeth have erupted.
If we do recommend interceptive treatment, it can prevent greater complications and reduce the length of treatment in the long term.
Why Should You Think About Orthodontic Treatment?
More Than Just Straight Teeth
While an attractive smile can do wonders for your self-confidence, misaligned teeth and an incorrect bite may affect more than just the appearance of your smile. The following conditions may potentially be corrected by orthodontics:
- Speech impediments
- Jaw or TMJ pain
- Difficulty chewing and eating
- Sleep apnea caused by mouth breathing and snoring
- Grinding or clenching of the teeth
- Gum disease and tooth decay - crowded or crooked teeth are more difficult to clean for both you and your dental hygienist.
Straight Teeth Are Healthy Teeth
When your teeth are correctly aligned, it's easier to keep them clean by flossing and brushing, which helps prevent other oral issues, including some that can affect your overall health.
A Straight Smile Builds Confidence & Self-Esteem
Successfully completed orthodontic treatment can help boost your self-confidence, give you a better quality of life, and allow you to smile freely for maybe the first time ever.
Untreated Oral Issues Will Get Worse
Delaying or refusing orthodontic treatment when it's needed can create long-term health issues that will wind up costing you more in the end.
New England Orthodontic Specialists recognizes that children, teens, and adults will all have different dental needs, requiring a different level of attention and care.
We work diligently with each patient in our Beverly, Salem, South Hamilton, and Topsfield offices to ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment in the most inviting environment.
